Founded in 1999 by Edgar Tzaquitzal and Maria Jimenez, Guaguanco Dance Company was the first salsa dance company in Houston, Texas. Since its inception, Guaguanco Dance Company has played a central role in shaping the art of salsa in Texas. In Houston, the Company is known for its creative routines that often meld elements of various Latin cultures, dances, and music. Many of the dancers that began in Guaguanco Dance Company have since founded their own dance companies, infusing the Houston scene with a variety of salsa styles and personalities.
